From Scan and Design to a Printed Mockup

Four steps, with your approval before the preview carries into production.

  1. Send Records

    Upload an intraoral scan of both arches, a bite, calibrated smile and retracted photographs, and your esthetic notes. If a digital smile design or wax-up already exists for the case, send it.

  2. Design or Confirm

    We design the smile digitally — or confirm the design you approved — establishing edge position, proportion and arrangement before anything is fabricated.

  3. Fabricate the Preview

    From the approved design we produce the mockup as a putty or clear matrix over the wax-up, or as a printed trial shell, whichever suits how you plan to seat it.

  4. Preview and Approve

    You try the mockup in the mouth, adjust with us if needed, and the approved preview becomes the reference the provisional and final work are built to.

A smile preview mockup is a physical trial smile built from an approved digital design or wax-up. It lets you and the patient see the proposed esthetics in the mouth — length, proportion, midline and arrangement — before any irreversible treatment begins.

The mockup is not a new plan; it is the plan made visible. Because it is fabricated from the design you already signed off on, what the patient previews at the chair is the same result production is built to deliver. That shared reference is what turns an esthetic conversation into a decision.

  • From an approved design: The mockup is generated from the digital smile design or wax-up, so it reflects the planned outcome, not a chairside guess.

How It Is Made

Matrix or Printed Shell — Made From the Wax-Up

We fabricate the preview one of two ways. A putty or clear matrix taken over the approved wax-up lets you carry an additive trial smile chairside with bis-acryl provisional resin. Or we print the design directly as a thin trial shell you seat over the untreated teeth. Both start from the same approved design, so both show the same result.

  • Silicone / clear matrix: A stent taken over the wax-up, so you can inject an additive mockup directly at the chair.

  • Printed trial shell: The design printed as a thin appliance seated over the natural teeth for a non-prep preview.

Smile Preview Mockups — Questions Dentists Ask

A matrix suits a bis-acrylic or composite trial you inject chairside from a printed or milled model — fast to adjust and easy to repeat. A printed or milled shell is a rigid preview the patient wears as a trial smile. Tell us how you seat previews and whether you want to prep through the mockup; that choice drives how we print, thickness, and whether a putty index ships with the case.

Not always, but it shortens the case when one exists. The mockup should reflect a design you and the patient already agree on — from a digital wax-up, DSD proof, or anterior case design package. Starting from photos alone means an extra design round before anything physical is built.

An STL of both arches, an accurate bite, and calibrated retracted and smile photos with a clear midline reference. Blurry or off-axis photos are the most common reason a preview looks right on screen and wrong in the mouth. If a prior design file exists, send it so the mockup matches the approved contours.

How to send a file

Yes — that is one of the main reasons to use it. When length and labial volume are approved in the mouth, you can prep to the mockup or an index derived from it, which surfaces insufficient clearance before the definitive restorations are ordered. The same approved shape then carries into provisionals and finals.

DSD is the facially driven plan on screen — proportion, edge position, and proof you approve digitally. The mockup is the physical trial smile built from that plan so the patient feels and sees the result before prep. Many cases run DSD or a wax-up first, then the mockup; see digital smile design for the planning step.
